Beyond a typical overview of using the camera app, this class goes deeper, showing you how to create more engaging pictures through practical image composition and photo editing. Although smartphones make the process of picture-taking easier, you still require the necessary skills to make a good photograph.

Smart(ER)phone Photography is a comprehensive and informative course that reveals the imaging power of these remarkable devices. The class consists of three weekly in-person sessions and an outing to wrap it all up. Best of all, you can retake the class at no additional cost.

Session 1

Go way past “up to speed” with your camera app and learn about all the cool features available, as well as how to use them to create more interesting pictures. CAMERA guides you through the native iPhone and Android camera apps, providing detailed explanations and recommended settings to get the most out of your mobile photography.

There’s a reason people are disappointed when the newest smartphone cameras don’t magically improve their photography. PICTURE explores the world of light and composition, providing practical tips for capturing sharp, balanced, and visually appealing photos, whether shooting portraits, landscapes, architecture, or everyday moments.

A photograph taken with a camera is just the starting point—a beginning. EDIT teaches you simple yet effective editing techniques to enhance your smartphone photos, utilizing both native and third-party editing apps. Learn how to refine exposure, enrich colors, sharpen details, and apply other essential adjustments that bring out the best in your images.

Practice makes perfect. To complement numerous at-home exercises, you get to try out your newfound skills with other students and your instructor at various locations throughout the Columbus area. Smartphones are “real” cameras, too. That’s why, in addition to this outing, you can join any upcoming student outing at no cost. Welcome to the family.

iPhone or Android devices are equally suitable for this class. Great effort has been made to ensure the material doesn't favor one device over another. Owners of newer or latest generation devices will obviously benefit more, but those who are less quick to adapt will also learn a lot. Besides, you will eventually upgrade your phone, and you'll have the knowledge and information at hand.

The photographic-related portion of the material covers the latest generation of native camera apps for iPhone and Android devices. Whereas the image editing portion explores the native iPhone Photos and Android Gallery apps.

 

Third-party camera apps and related gear, such as attachable lenses, filters, tripods, and hand grips, designed to improve your mobile photography, are also included in the material.

Learning mobile photography and image editing can be challenging, especially if you're not tech-savvy. If you need help, I am available before, after, and between sessions. You may also retake the class, whether in whole or in part, at no cost.

Life happens. If you cannot make all three sessions, you can jump in on any upcoming class to make up the material. Plus, you can retake the class as many times as you want at no cost.

All ages are welcome to attend, but the majority of our students are adults. Although we have had students as young as 12 years old participate without issue, it all comes down to your child's ability to follow along. You can opt for a Personal Session if the class is too challenging.

 

Note: Minors under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Classes are held at Haven Collective, 2025 Riverside Drive, Columbus, Ohio 43221 (between Trabue Rd. and 5th Ave.) The building is wheelchair accessible with ample free parking.

Although rare, class cancellations can occur. You may switch to another class, opt for a base Personal Session, or receive a full refund. Single-session cancellations for inclement weather or personal reasons will receive a make-up session.
